March Cement Shipments Tumble 

Total shipments of portland and blended cement, including imports, in the United States and Puerto Rico in March were an estimated 8.01 million metric tons (Mt), an 8.1% decrease from shipments in March 2023, according to the latest USGS Mineral Industry Survey. Shipments for the year through March totaled an estimated 21.4 Mt, a 4.4% decrease from those for the same period in 2023. 

Of total blended tonnage reported in 2024 year-to-date, 11.0 Mt (98%) was estimated to be portland-limestone cement (Type IL); the leading destination for Type IL shipments by tonnage was Texas. 

The leading producing states for portland and blended cement in March were, in descending order, Texas, Missouri, California, Florida and Alabama. The leading cement-consuming states (Texas, Florida, California, Arizona and Georgia, in descending order) received 45.3% of March shipments.

Masonry cement shipments totaled an estimated 186,000 metric tons (t) in March, a 16.3% decrease from those in the prior-year period. Shipments for the year through March totaled an estimated 530,000 t, a decrease of 9.5% from those for the same period in 2023. The leading masonry cement-consuming states in March were, in descending order, Florida, Texas, California, North Carolina, Tennessee and Georgia; these states received 62.9% of March shipments.

Clinker production, excluding Puerto Rico, totaled an estimated 5.58 Mt in March, a slight increase from production in March 2023. Production for the year through March totaled an estimated 15.4 Mt, a 5.0% decrease from the same period in 2023. The leading clinker-producing states in March were, in descending order, California, Texas, Florida, Missouri and Alabama.
